6 What should I expect from a family, newborn or maternity photography session?

My sessions are calm, intuitive and story-led. I’ll gently guide you when needed, but mostly I’ll give you space to connect naturally. Whether it’s a newborn session at home or a family shoot outdoors, I focus on capturing real moments rather than stiff poses.

Where are your photography sessions based?

I’m a Gisborne based photographer (in the Macedon Ranges, Victoria) and offer sessions across Melbourne and surrounding areas. Sessions can take place in your home, outdoors at a meaningful location, or at one of my recommended spots with beautiful natural light.

What is the best time for a newborn photography session?

The ideal time for newborn photography is within the first 2–3 weeks after birth, when babies are still very sleepy and curled up. That said, I take a relaxed approach—beautiful images can be captured at any stage. As they grow bigger they become more engaged with the camera which will give you more awake images. If you’re unsure I am always happy to chat through what might suit your family best.

What should we wear for family photos in Melbourne or the Macedon Ranges?

4 What if my kids don’t cooperate during the session?

I encourage you to wear colours and patterns that feel like you—the goal is cohesion, not matching. Think about tones that sit well together rather than everyone wearing the same thing. If you’re unsure, I provide examples and guidance in my What to Wear Guide to help you feel confident putting outfits together.

That’s completely okay and very normal. I take a child led approach and never expect children to sit still, pose or perform. If a child is unsure or not in the mood I will not force them to participate or smile. Some of the most meaningful images come from movement, play and real connection.

If you stay calm and connected with your kids they will often mirror that energy and feel more safe and relaxed which helps their natural personality come through.

I also use gentle age appropriate ways to engage children through play and curiosity always guided by what feels right for them in the moment.

What if my kids don’t cooperate during the session?

Once you book, I’ll send your contract and invoice to secure your session. A 20% non refundable deposit is required to confirm your date.

You’ll also receive a short questionnaire and my what to wear guide.

We’ll then finalise your date, time and location. In the lead up I’ll be in touch so everything feels easy and clear. Your edited gallery is delivered within 4 to 6 weeks.
