What Your Brand Photos Should Feel Like (Not Just Look Like)

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how often we associate “brand photography” with a stiff headshot against a white wall. You know the one, arms crossed, half smile, blazer just so. And sure, there’s a time and place for that, but if you’re a small business owner or creative, your brand is probably… well, a little more human than that.

And sure, there’s a time and place for that, but if you’re a small business owner or creative, your brand is probably… well, a little more human than that.

It’s in the way you talk to clients, the spaces you work from, the energy you bring into a room. That’s the stuff I want to capture.

A recent branding shoot reminded me of this

I worked with Bianca who is the founder of North Marketing. Bianca and I knew immediately we didn’t just want to “look professional,” she wanted to feel at ease in the images. She wanted photos that showed what working with her feels like.

So instead of worrying about perfect posture, we leaned into soft movement. She curled up on her sofa, scrolled through her phone like she would on any regular day. We captured quiet thinking moments, those tiny in-between gestures, and also a few more polished frames to round it out.

None of it felt forced, that’s when you get the good stuff.

Photos can still look professional without feeling staged

There’s a sweet spot between professional and personal, that space where your photos say, “Yes, I know what I’m doing,” but also, “You can talk to me like a real human.”

It’s about giving potential clients a sense of your energy, your vibe, your way of showing up, before they’ve even read your About page.

It’s not just about what people see, it’s about what they sense

You don’t need a full rebrand to elevate your visuals. Sometimes it’s as simple as choosing natural light over a studio, wearing something you’d actually work in, or showing a glimpse of your process.

If you’re building something from the heart, your photos should feel like that too.

Choosing the Perfect Location for Your Family Portrait Session in the Macedon Ranges

Choosing a location for your next family portrait session can be overwhelming. Let’s breakdown some of my favourite spots to hold a family photography session, and why you may choose them.

Finding the right location for your family portraits is about more than just a pretty backdrop, it's about choosing a space that feels relaxed, comfortable, and truly you.

The Macedon Ranges is known for its natural beauty and seasonal changes, especially in autumn, when the trees turn to gold and rust and the air begins feeling crisp. Whether you’re drawn to open paddocks, forest edges or your own backyard, there’s no shortage of beautiful places to create cinematic, authentic images.

Here are a few things I consider when helping you choose the perfect spot:

1. Somewhere Familiar or Personal
Your family might feel most at ease in your own backyard, on your front decking, or wandering around your property. These familiar spaces often lead to the most relaxed and heartfelt photos, especially with little ones.

2. Soft Light and Simple Backdrops

Photography is all about light, not just location. I’ll help guide you to places where the natural light is gentle and flattering. Think shady trees, golden paddock edges, or that perfect filtered golden hour at the end of the day.

3. Easy to Access
We want to keep things stress-free. Local reserves, private gardens, and open rural spaces often offer a quiet, natural feel without the distractions or logistics of busy public spaces.

4. Seasonal Details
Autumn in the Macedon Ranges is truly something else. If you’re booking in the cooler months, think crunchy leaves underfoot, warm tones in the trees, and soft light that makes every photo feel nostalgic. Other seasons bring their own magic too — from fresh greens in spring to the golden dryness of summer.

No two families are the same, and no two sessions should be either. Maybe your kids run barefoot through long grass, maybe you're most at ease curled up on the couch at home, or maybe there's a paddock you drive past every day that catches the light just right. My job is to meet you there, in your rhythm, your chaos, your quiet, and turn those little moments into something you can hold on to forever.

If you’re unsure where to have your next family photo session, get in touch to discuss location options near you.

Branding shoot: Bay of Fires, TAS

Steph Rubock, the visionary behind "Alchemy with Steph," embarked on a mesmerizing branding shoot set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Bay of Fires in Tasmania.

Steph Rubock, the visionary behind "Alchemy with Steph," embarked on a mesmerizing branding shoot set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Bay of Fires in Tasmania. A qualified Hypnotherapist, NLP Practitioner, and Timeline Therapist, Steph's journey began long before her current venture. For 26 years, she has successfully owned and operated the esteemed Footprints Educational Complex in Burnie.

Now, driven by a newfound passion, Steph reached out to me to capture her essence and expertise through a portfolio of branding images. The picturesque Bay of Fires provided the perfect canvas for this project.

As the sun peeked between the clouds, Steph's shoot commenced. The pristine white sands and crystalline waters mirrored the purity of her intentions and the clarity of her vision. Each shot conveyed a sense of serenity and confidence, reflecting the tranquility she seeks to bring into the lives of her clients. The brief was to develop a collection of images which could be used across platforms for her business. During our initial consultation Steph shared her branding colours, mission and keywords which represented her business. This enabled us to plan ahead, during the day ran smoothly and, of course, we had fun in the process.

Steph's venture, "Alchemy with Steph," is all about nurturing the mind and body connection. Through hypnotherapy, NLP, and timeline therapy, she aims to help her clients find balance, unlock their potential, and catalyze positive change within themselves.

The Bay of Fires, with its untouched beauty and calming atmosphere, became more than just a location; it became a symbol of Steph's commitment to healing and self-discovery. Every shot captured her authenticity, radiating warmth and wisdom, instilling a sense of trust and assurance in her future clients.

The images portray Steph in various natural settings – from sitting peacefully by the ocean's edge to walking along the coastline, blending seamlessly with the surrounding nature. These visuals personify her ability to seamlessly blend her therapeutic practices with the natural flow of life.

As the day drew to a close, Steph's portfolio was almost complete, in front of a mesmerising sunset I was able to witness her in action. With a massage table overlooking the water’s edge, I was able to capture Steph and her client during a therapy session. The branding shoot, including headshots, lifestyle imagery and details at a very special Airbnb at (The Gardens) Bay of Fires encapsulated the essence of "Alchemy with Steph."

The location on the east coast of Tasmania provided the perfect setting for this awe-inspiring tale of evolution, healing, and the unyielding power of following one's heart.

Picture this: A rugged coastline in North West Tasmania, with its breathtaking views of the Bass Strait, set the stage for their magical day. With less than 35 guests, the vibe was cozy and close-knit. And let's not forget the stunning sunset portraits taken on top of a cliff—breathtaking, a Tasmanian wedding photographers dream!

Nestled on the Devonport coast, The Cove stole hearts as the perfect summer wedding venue. Think panoramic views, surrounded by a rugged coastline that exudes tranquillity and natural charm. The small guest list created an intimate atmosphere, allowing the couple to share their vows in a way that truly touched everyone's hearts.

Getting ready: Both bride and groom were able to get ready on the property in separate spaces, setting the mood for a relaxing day ahead. The Brides bouquet was classic, featuring my favourite baby’s breath, gold accessories and white leather heels.
