Choosing the Perfect Location for Your Family Portrait Shoot (Tasmania edition)

Choosing a location for your next family portrait session can be overwhelming. Lets breakdown some (tassie inspired) locations and why you may choose them.

When it comes to lifestyle portraits, choosing the right location is paramount. It's not just about aesthetics, but also about capturing the essence of your family and your unique style. Each location brings its own charm and character, allowing you to tell your family's story in a way that resonates with you. There is no shortage of rustic landscapes and stunning views across Tasmania, so let's explore four beautiful photoshoot locations – the beach, countryside paddocks, lush green forest, and coastal grassy fields – and how they can best suit your family and style.

1. Beach Bliss: If your family exudes a relaxed and carefree vibe, the beach might be your canvas. With the sun-kissed sands and endless waves, the beach offers a backdrop of tranquility. This setting is perfect for families who already spend time at the beach as little ones are occupied and free to explore. If its a clear night, you’re almost guarenteed a beautiful sunset.

2. Countryside Charm: If you value simplicity and the rustic charm of nature, a countryside paddock might be your scene. Rolling fields and open skies provide a timeless backdrop, emphasizing the bond between your family and the land. The golden hues of a sunset over the paddocks can create a warm, inviting atmosphere. If you or family own private land somewhere or have a family property, consider it as the location for your next shoot. Familiar places will put everyone at ease and reduce time getting comfortably in a new location.

3. Lush Green Forest: If your family is adventurous and nature-loving, a lush green forest is your haven. The dense foliage and dappled sunlight create an ethereal setting. This location offers a chance to showcase your connection with nature, while also allowing for playful and candid moments amid the trees, picking flowers or foraging. Due to the dense nature of a forest setting, shoots can be held almost anytime of day allowing for dappled sunlight to filter through branches and trees.

4. Coastal Grassy Fields: For a mix of open space and the serenity of the ocean, coastal grassy fields are a fantastic choice. The blend of tall grasses and the vast expanse of the sea can symbolize both growth and endless possibilities. This location works well for families seeking a balance between coast and countryside. Spring and Summer are the most popular seasons for beachside shoots, with daylight savings pushing the sunset back later, the evenings are warmer and allow for everyone to be a little more comfortable.

So take a moment to reflect on what best represents your family, and let the location become the stage where your memories come to life.

Branding shoot: Bay of Fires, TAS

Steph Rubock, the visionary behind "Alchemy with Steph," embarked on a mesmerizing branding shoot set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Bay of Fires in Tasmania.

Steph Rubock, the visionary behind "Alchemy with Steph," embarked on a mesmerizing branding shoot set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Bay of Fires in Tasmania. A qualified Hypnotherapist, NLP Practitioner, and Timeline Therapist, Steph's journey began long before her current venture. For 26 years, she has successfully owned and operated the esteemed Footprints Educational Complex in Burnie.

Now, driven by a newfound passion, Steph reached out to me to capture her essence and expertise through a portfolio of branding images. The picturesque Bay of Fires provided the perfect canvas for this project.

As the sun peeked between the clouds, Steph's shoot commenced. The pristine white sands and crystalline waters mirrored the purity of her intentions and the clarity of her vision. Each shot conveyed a sense of serenity and confidence, reflecting the tranquility she seeks to bring into the lives of her clients. The brief was to develop a collection of images which could be used across platforms for her business. During our initial consultation Steph shared her branding colours, mission and keywords which represented her business. This enabled us to plan ahead, during the day ran smoothly and, of course, we had fun in the process.

Steph's venture, "Alchemy with Steph," is all about nurturing the mind and body connection. Through hypnotherapy, NLP, and timeline therapy, she aims to help her clients find balance, unlock their potential, and catalyze positive change within themselves.

The Bay of Fires, with its untouched beauty and calming atmosphere, became more than just a location; it became a symbol of Steph's commitment to healing and self-discovery. Every shot captured her authenticity, radiating warmth and wisdom, instilling a sense of trust and assurance in her future clients.

The images portray Steph in various natural settings – from sitting peacefully by the ocean's edge to walking along the coastline, blending seamlessly with the surrounding nature. These visuals personify her ability to seamlessly blend her therapeutic practices with the natural flow of life.

As the day drew to a close, Steph's portfolio was almost complete, in front of a mesmerising sunset I was able to witness her in action. With a massage table overlooking the water’s edge, I was able to capture Steph and her client during a therapy session. The branding shoot, including headshots, lifestyle imagery and details at a very special Airbnb at (The Gardens) Bay of Fires encapsulated the essence of "Alchemy with Steph."

The location on the east coast of Tasmania provided the perfect setting for this awe-inspiring tale of evolution, healing, and the unyielding power of following one's heart.

Picture this: A rugged coastline in North West Tasmania, with its breathtaking views of the Bass Strait, set the stage for their magical day. With less than 35 guests, the vibe was cozy and close-knit. And let's not forget the stunning sunset portraits taken on top of a cliff—breathtaking, a Tasmanian wedding photographers dream!

Nestled on the Devonport coast, The Cove stole hearts as the perfect summer wedding venue. Think panoramic views, surrounded by a rugged coastline that exudes tranquillity and natural charm. The small guest list created an intimate atmosphere, allowing the couple to share their vows in a way that truly touched everyone's hearts.

Getting ready: Both bride and groom were able to get ready on the property in separate spaces, setting the mood for a relaxing day ahead. The Brides bouquet was classic, featuring my favourite baby’s breath, gold accessories and white leather heels.
